Could Boris Johnson really be Prime Minister?

The National review has said that "if someone had suggested 15 years ago that Boris Johnson might become the prime minister of Great Britain, the likely reaction in almost every quarter would have been untrammeled hysteria." I think more likely the answer would have been who's Boris Johnson?

Now an almost internationally known figure Boris Johnson is in danger of becoming the most recognizable politician in Britain. Lets face it he is not easy to forget.

Boris is already the most recognized British leader in China. I saw him collect the Olympic flag at the paralympic closing ceremony in Beijing. His hair ruffled and his shirt hanging out, my Chinese wife said to me we have a special word for describing this type of man in China - "man who don't give a shit! (in Chinese of course)"

Boris is not a man without talent:he was editor of the Spectator at 35, won election to parliament at 37, and juggled the two roles happily until he entered the shadow cabinet in 2005. In 2008 he was elected Mayor of London beating the popular incumbent Ken Livingstone.

Boris wants to be Prime Minister

Boris seems about as likely to become PM as Winston Churchill would have been before the outbreak of war. Not that it would take as much as a war to get a Boris premiership. Comparing Boris Johnson and Winston Churchill is easy; they are both not normal people. Winston was different and so is Boris.

Boris is a winner. Not only did Johnson win re-election to the mayoralty in 2012, but he was returned with the largest personal mandate of any elected official in British history.

Thus, despite maintaining in 2003 that he had "as much as chance of becoming prime minister as of being decapitated by a frisbee," Westminster is divided between those who now believe him to be unstoppable, and those who can't stop laughing at the idea that he is being taken seriously as an alternative prime minister... Conservative donors have had enough, and are lining up behind the London Mayor.

The Telegraph also related that Johnson "met Rupert Murdoch recently to discuss how his candidacy might be promoted."

A political titan

It seems almost everyone is starting to become disenchanted by the Conservative Government. Elected to cut spending and the excess of the Brown years it seems they have done neither. Some reforms already in place will take too long to make a difference. Thatcher managed to turn Britain upside down in her first term, Cameron has hardly started anything.

Britain is in a mess and it needs a special someone to sort it out. We had a Thatcher in the 80's but we don't need a Thatcher in the 20Teens' we need something but nobody knows what. Maybe we should ask Boris?

Boris used the issue of the Heathrow third runway to publicly challenge David Cameron. There was no rebuke, the PM more or less ran away and hid. Many back benchers in the Conservative party are now thinking that Boris could be unstoppable.

Boris for PM!

Winston Churchill spent years in the wilderness and would have been an unlikely Prime Minister before the outbreak of war. Not that it would take as much as a war to get a Boris premiership. Boris Johnson and Winston Churchill are like two peas in a pod. Both possess brilliance and fortitude. The Smart Money Is on Boris Jonhson for Prime Minister

Paddypower.com now has Boris Johnson at 14/1 to be the next Prime Minister of Great Britain. This is not a joke but deadly serious. Boris is currently on shorter odds than William Hauge (16/1) and George Osbourne (25/1), and therefore currently the most likely Conservative Prime Minister in waiting. Those wanting to make a political bet should take note of this rising star; David Cameron certainly has and he looks worried.

Why is Boris Johnson so clearly headed for the top job? Well the simple reason is he is a winner. Those Tory MP's currently underwater and at risk of losing their seat at the next election are very worried. They are starting to wonder if a new leader might be a good idea after all. David Cameron has so far not delivered the goods he was elected for. With the premiership half gone it would take a lot to reverse the Tory decline.

There is of course the small issue that Boris (although a popular leader) is not even an MP. And what's more already has a job as London's mayor. To become Prime Minister Boris would have to become an MP (while still mayor) and then run for Conservative party leader and win (and then maybe win a General Election also). A clever political bet would be to take the 14/1 now and wait for the odds to shorten massively when Boris becomes an MP (surely the odds would drop to about 3/1) and then trade out of the bet.

Politicalbetting.com an authority on politics bets in the UK has so far barely mentioned Boris as a real candidate for PM. @MSmithsonPB is not playing up Boris' chances of becoming MP and instead is pointing out that Ed Milliband (currently the shorts odds for PM at 11/8) is not the peoples choice for leader (only 31% want him to be PM) and most prefer Cameron in a two hoarse race. So the public don't want Ed and if the polls are to believed prefer Labour over the Tories (now 15 points behind) then what do they want?

Yvette Cooper is currently at 8/1 to be the next Prime Minister. Compared to Boris she should find it much easier to become PM given that she is already an MP and in the shadow cabinet. Still Boris' odds do look very short (14/1) compared to Yvette Coopers, given the amount of work Boris would have to do to even become leader of the Conservative party.

Boris Johnson's campaign to position himself as the natural successor toDavid Cameron has received a big boost from a poll showing he is Britain's most respected political figure - outstripping even Margaret Thatcher.

A YouGov poll, showing the London mayor is respected by 58% of voters will be welcomed by those who want to see Boris as the next leader of the Conservative party. MP's worried about losing their seats to Labour at the next election will be seriously considering jumping on the Boris bandwagon.

His success in winning two consecutive mayoral contests in a predominantly Labour city show he has the ability to win over voters who would not in other circumstances have voted Tory. It's not just in London he is popular the YouGov poll also his popularity reaches other parts of the country in the Midlands and northern England, for example, he is respected by 55% and 53% of the population, respectively.

Words from Downing Street claim that Boris Johnson is not a serious politician is now being openly challenged. After four years as Mayor of London he now has more government experience than most in the Conservative party including David Cameron. What's more when it comes to principles nearly a third of voters (29%) believe Johnson sticks to what he believes in.

Brand Boris is very appealing to the public.

Ignore any claims made by Johnson that he has no intention or chance of becoming prime minister. In television interviews he now struggles to keep a straight face when he is asked the question. "I have as much chance as being reincarnated as an olive," he said in one. Boris's bumbling act has slowly started to tone down and he appearance becoming more brushed. He is very close to looking like a real leader.

To be Prime Minister Boris needs a seat in Parliament. He is committed to his post as Mayor of London until 2016 when his term ends. A General Election will most likely be called in 2015. The door is open to Boris to stand as an MP in 2015. Being an MP and Mayor for one year would surly not be unacceptable to the public even if there are moans from the establishment.

Boris is a vote winner for the Conservatives so they will have no choice but to welcome Boris with open arms in this difficult time. The kind of boos that could come from Boris could give the Tories a chance to gain a parliamentary majority and drop their coalition partner the LibDems.

Once inside parliament the conservative leadership will have a huge elephant in the room. Boris wants to be Prime Minister and everyone knows it.. Boris must surely frighten anyone else who holds leadership ambitions in the Conservative party. Anyone who stands next to Boris has the danger of looking boring and unpopular. If David Cameron was to suddenly disappear and the ballot for leader of the Conservative party was a run off between Boris and George Osborne then the result would be in no doubt. Effectively Boris is the next leader of the Conservative party.

Boris' credentials are sound. He is highly educated and is so well connected some say he has the world on speed dial. His current job as Mayor of London has ironed out any issues that he is not up to the job. As mayor Boris has been in charge of transport and policing in one of the world's busiest cities and of an annual budget worth about 15 billion pounds ($24 billion).
